Cancun is undoubtedly one of the very best diving vacation destinations in the world; warm tropical waters with exceptional levels of visibility, and the presence of the great Mesoamerican reef make this undisputed. And that is before you even begin to consider the fresh water cenotes, caves, and the shipwrecks that are all available to explore if you have a guide and your diving certification. Beginners need not fear, however; there are a number of schools which will be happy to teach you, lend equipment to you, and even take you on guided tours. Here are some of the recommended places for the best Cancun diving!
BEST CANCUN DIVING
Great Mesoamerican Reef
The great Mesoamerican reef is the second largest in the world and provides all who visit it with a stunning experience, and memories that they will be able to cherish forever. Here you can find a huge array of sub-aquatic wildlife, as well as some of the most stunning examples of coral reefs that you will find anywhere. The Aristos and Manchones reefs in particular are hugely popular with visitors due to the wildlife in the area which includes Barracuda, Turtles, and even manta rays. One of the best choices for Cancun diving.
MUSA (Cancun’s Subaquatic Museum)
The MUSA museum is a truly unique place and warrants a visit when you stay in Cancun. Even if you can’t dive you can still visit as some of the exhibitions are visible from glass bottomed boats. This display is made up of the works of British artist Jason DeCaires Taylor which were placed on the seabed in order to create a man-made reef. The project was successful and, as a result, the sculptures have been covered in coral and now provide an underwater habitat for sub-aquatic wildlife. They are also, of course, beautiful in an eerie, magical way. A Cancun diving tour which includes the MUSA exhibition sites will not disappoint; just remember your waterproof camera.
Shipwrecks – Historical Cancun Diving
There are many shipwrecks on the seabed in and around the Cancun coastline, some of which were deliberately sunk to help ailing ecosystems, which make for eerie and interesting dives. You can see many different kinds of ships, too, from old WWII minesweepers to cargo ships. After some time in the water these ships become home to the local wildlife and, as such, are a great place to see Turtles, Rays, and even Barracuda.
Cenotes
Cenotes are incredible freshwater sinkholes that have formed from intricate tunnel systems over many thousands of years. If you are a certified diver you can go down into these tunnels and explore the magical realm beneath, but please do take a guide with you! The cenotes are beautiful, but the currents can easily take you off guard and even highly experienced divers have become lost in their labyrinthine depths. With that said, however, a cenote dive is the pinnacle of experience for many and will not easily be forgotten.
Cancun diving is one of the treasures of Mexico. Don’t miss out on your next vacation to Cancun – get certified!
